Devils Blow 3-0 Lead, Lose 4-3 in Game 3

When Zach Parise, Stephen Gionta, and Patrik Elias gave the New Jersey Devils a quick 3-0 lead, it seemed as though the Devils would roll through this Game 4 easily. The Florida Panthers had pulled Jose Theodore in favor of Scott Clemmensen. Things were definitely looking good for Devils fans. Boy, did things change. The Panthers would rally, by scoring 3 goals, with Sean Bergenheim, Jason Garrison, and Mike Weaver each scoring the goals. That was the end of Martin Brodeur's night. He gave up three goals in twelve shots. It's unacceptable for a starting goalie in the playoffs to play this poorly, especially from a goalie as legendary as Brodeur.
In comes Johan Hedberg. Brian Campbell would quickly score a power play goal, completing the comeback, giving the Panthers a 4-3 lead. After many comeback attempts by New Jersey, the Panthers held them off, and won the game 4-3.
In an overall disappointing game, the most disappointing aspect of the Devils' game tonight was their penalty kill. During the regular season, the Devils had the best penalty kill in league, killing off 89.6% of opposing power plays. The Panthers' power play have lit up the New Jersey's penalty kill all series long, but tonight was especially brutal for the Devils. Three of the Panthers four goals were on the power play. That's not acceptable for a penalty kill unit of that caliber.
As a Devils fan, I was enormously disappointed with how the Devils played tonight. They lost their intensity when they needed it most, and then couldn't deliver when they needed too. They're going to have to dig way deeper if they want a real shot at the Stanley Cup.
