Why Benching Gaborik was the Right Move

Last night, during a Game 2 loss to the New Jersey Devils, Rangers coach John Tortorella made a decision that many questioned. He benched star player Marian Gaborik for the first half of the third period. The Rangers certainly could have used his offense, but he could not contribute because of his benching. That's why so many Rangers fans do not agree with Tortorella's decision. I believe that Tortorella made the right decision by not letting a star player get off easy on something that a player like Mike Rupp would have been benched for. John Tortorella brings to the team the mindset that every player must be held accountable for his actions. No exceptions.
An action, or lack thereof, by Gaborik caused his benching. On the second goal by the Devils, defenseman Bryce Salvador shot the puck, which Devils forward Ryan Carter deflected into the net. Gaborik had the opportunity to block the shot, but he did not. This angered Tortorella, as shot-blocking is a key part of the Rangers' game. Shot-blocking fuels the fire that has been their success all season long, and during a big game, Gaborik did not buy into the Rangers' system. To Tortorella it doesn't matter if it's a regular season game or a playoff game, a star player or a fourth-liner; every player must be held accountable for his actions. Gaborik made a bad decision, therefore, he should sit. And sit, he did.
Look for Gaborik to play a great game in Game 3, as he will want to prove Coach Tortorella wrong for benching him; and that's exactly what Tortorella wants.
